SH 114/121 Overview

The DFW Connector project achieved final acceptance in Mar. 2014.

  • October 2009: NorthGate Constructors awarded project from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)
  • February 2010: Groundbreaking for the DFW Connector project. Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez attended the celebration. The DFW Connector received $260 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds - the largest amount received by any highway project in the country.
  • 2010 Major Construction Activities:
    • Began construction on future SH 114 TEXpress lanes, including drainage, grading and paving work. Find out more information on TEXpress lanes by clicking here.
    • Began construction on various bridges north of DFW Airport.
    • Began construction on one of two new, significant flyover bridges - the eastbound SH 114 flyover to southbound SH 121.
    • Began utility relocations across the project.
    • Demolished and reconstructed first half of Main Street bridge.
  • 2011 Major Construction Activities:
    • Began SH 114 demolition over SH 26 and construction on SH 26.
    • Completed construction on the eastbound SH 114 off-ramp to northbound SH 121, widening its previous capacity.
    • Completed all right-of-way acquisition.
    • Completed various bridges north of DFW Airport.
    • Completed westbound SH 114 frontage road over SH 26.
    • Completed southbound International Parkway north of DFW Airport, including opening the eastbound SH 114 off-ramp to DFW Airport.
    • Demolished and reconstructed the first half of William D. Tate Avenue.
    • Demolished and reconstructed second half of Main Street bridge.
  • December 2011: Project reaches more than 50 percent completion.
  • 2012 Major Construction Activities:
    • Began construction on the second new, significant flyover bridge - the northbound SH 121 flyover to westbound SH 114.
    • Completed all major utility construction.
    • Completed final bridge demolition on the project.
    • Completed column and cap structures work across the project.
    • Demolished the Wall Street and FM 1709/Southlake Boulevard bridges over SH 114; constructed a new FM 1709/Northwest Highway bridge.
    • Demolished and reconstructed the first half of Texan Trail bridge.
    • Opened Main Street and William D. Tate Avenue bridges to full capacity.
    • Opened the new westbound SH 114 bridge to southbound SH 121 in Grapevine.
    • Opened the southbound SH 121 bridge to westbound SH 114 north of DFW Airport, the first traffic switch to add capacity to the project.
  • 2013 Major Construction Activities:
    • February – Opened the new eastbound SH 114 flyover to southbound SH 121.
    • March/April– Opened SH 114 from Freeport Parkway to International Parkway to final configuration.
    • April – Opened the FM 1709/Northwest Highway bridge to full capacity; opened eastbound SH 114 from Texan Trail to Freeport Parkway to final configuration; opened the new northbound SH 121 flyover to westbound SH 114.
    • May – Opened new direct connectors from eastbound SH 114 and northbound International Parkway to IH-635.
    • June – Opened westbound SH 114 at Texan Trail to final configuration and the southbound SH 121 bridge to westbound SH 114 to full capacity.
    • June – Opened northbound SH 121 bridge to eastbound SH 114 to full capacity.
    • August – Opened westbound SH 114 at Freeport Parkway to final configuration; opened eastbound SH 114 from SH 26 to Main to final configurations, completing all major eastbound SH 114 work; opened the new northbound SH 26 bridge to eastbound SH 114.
    • September – Opened westbound SH 114 from SH 26 to FM 1709/Southlake Boulevard, completing all major westbound SH 114 work; opened northbound SH 121 at William D. Tate Avenue to full capacity; opened southbound SH 121 from FM 2499 to Bass Pro Drive to full capacity; opened the new, dedicated DFW Airport ramp from FM 2499; opened SH 26 to final configuration; opened southbound SH 121 north of DFW Airport to final configuration, completing all major southbound SH 121 work.
    • October – Opened northbound SH 121 at Bass Pro to final configuration, the final major traffic switch and completing all major work on northbound SH 121.
  • November 2013: The DFW Connector project reached substantial completion, meaning traffic was put in its final pattern and all major work was completed. At this time, NorthGate Constructors also began capital maintenance of the project.
  • March 2014: The DFW Connector project achieved final acceptance.
