Green Efforts

The DFW Connector project is committed to reconstructing State Highways 114 and 121 in ways that minimize
environmental impacts. Below are some of ways we’re working to protect the environment during construction.

In 2013, the DFW Connector was awarded the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Globe Award for its environmental efforts and commitment. Click here to see a video of this year's recipients.

Dust Control

Dust control:
To minimize dust on the project, water trucks drive through each operation and spray water to moisten the ground. Water trucks fill up with water at large Klein tanks, similar to how a car fills up with gas at a gas station.

  Truck Maintenance

Maintenance program:
At NorthGate, we maintain and repair equipment at our maintenance facility. Performing maintenance inspections and repairing equipment at this facility allows for fewer spills and leaks, lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency.

Soil stabilization:
To stabilize the soil, lime is typically pumped into trucks, driven to the job site and placed on the ground (called "slaking"). We pumped lime from our slaking tanks under the ground into the SH 114/121 median. This reduced emissions because lime trucks did not have to travel as far to slake lime in the SH 114/121 median between International Parkway and Main Street. Pumping lime below SH 114/121 also eliminated the possibility of spills on the roadway.

Idling policy:
Our pieces of equipment are only allowed to run for three to five minutes without moving. After five minutes, equipment must be turned off or used. Our idling policy reduces air pollution, improving air quality in the DFW Metroplex.

Night work:
We perform much of our construction and lane closures at night. This means that during the day, we avoid causing traffic delays, which ultimately increase emissions.

Water Recycling

Water recycling:
We recycle water in several ways on this project. At our maintenance facility, a water recycler takes water from vehicle washing and filters it for reuse.

  Wheel Washing

Wheel washing:
We also use a water-recycling wheel wash, which prevents mud from getting on the roadways. Water is contained in this system and reused for additional wheel washing.

Dust Control

Storm Water Best Management
Practices (BMPs):

Our BMPs ensure that all dirt from the construction site stays within the construction site. NorthGate’s BMPs include rock filter dams, silt fence and silt sock. Our silt sock is filled with 100 percent recyclable, biodegradable materials. We also put additives in our silt sock to help neutralize pH, which ensures that any water leaving the construction site is safe.

Testing and sampling:
Our water testing and sampling ensure the highest performance of operations and prevent pollution.

Dust Control

Bird nest surveys:
Prior to bridge demolition and clearing trees, we inspect all bridges and trees for active bird nests. During nesting season, all active nests are protected. For example, we preserved this Mourning Dove nest at DFW Airport until the doves permanently left the nest.

Landscaping plan:
Our project will plant trees to replace the ones that are removed during construction. We will plant approximately 700 trees throughout the entire DFW Connector project area once construction is complete.

  Truck Maintenance

Preserved habitats:
NorthGate preserves riparian habitats and protects streams and wetlands. In fact, we’ve changed some construction designs to protect these important environmental areas.

Dust Control

High-tech fueling facility and trucks:
Simply put, our state-of-the-art fueling facility prevents gas spills and minimizes Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions. Should a spill occur, systems are in place to ensure the runoff is contained and treated.

Universal waste management:
NorthGate manages universal waste to ensure that certain materials like batteries and light bulbs are disposed of properly.

Spill kits and training:
Each company truck and piece of equipment on this job includes a spill kit, and employees are trained on how to use them to clean up small spills.

Concrete recycling:
NorthGate has on-site crushers that will break down old concrete from previous removals and recycle it for use as base in new pavement. When operating, our crushers break down an average of 200 tons per hour! Recycling concrete also reduces emissions because we don’t have to transfer materials from a rock quarry.

Metal recycling:
Our primary rebar (steel reinforcing bar) supplier makes their rebar out of 95% recycled materials (80% post-consumer and 15% pre-consumer).

Office recycling
We are committed to recycling not only on the jobsite, but also in the office. We utilize single-stream recycling, which means that all of our recyclables (paper, plastic, glass etc.) are sorted at a recycling facility.
